THE MYTH OF SHAVING, PORES AND SPRAY TANNING:

Expert Tips for Flawless Skin Prep and Maintenance

Get the Perfect Spray Tan: Skin Prep Tips for Flawless Results

Timing your shave and preparing your skin correctly can make the difference between an amazing, even spray tan and a patchy, uneven one. Here's the ultimate guide for flawless results and how to avoid those annoying spots.

Why Skin Prep is Key

Products Create Barriers:

Avoid applying any products (body wash, moisturizer, deodorant, etc.) on the day of your tan. These items can prevent the tanning solution from absorbing evenly, affecting the final color.

pH Matters:

Many common skincare products raise your skin's pH, potentially causing the tan to turn an undesirable orange or golden hue.

Shave Strategically:

Shaving right before your spray tan can dry out your skin. Some solutions can irritate freshly shaved areas, especially those containing alcohol. It's best to shave 24 hours before your appointment to let your skin's natural moisture balance return.

Your Pre-Tan Routine

Shave the Day Before:

For optimal results, shave 24 hours before your tan. Avoid heavy creams or lotions afterward.

Exfoliate Gently:

A soft washcloth or a gentle scrub works great!

Product-Free Tan Day:

No products on the big day! Arrive with clean skin – skip even deodorant or makeup.

Dress for Success:

Wear loose-fitting clothing after your tan to avoid smudging.

Know Your Skin

Dress for Success:

Pores don't actually open and close, so hot or cold water won't change them. However, regular cleansing and gentle exfoliation can minimize their appearance.

Spot Check:

Spotting is less common on well-prepared skin. If you're prone to spots, use a lighter formula and consider extra exfoliation. Make Your Tan Last

Sellers of spray tanning equipment make the marketing claim that a spray tan can be done in two minutes with an HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) spray tan system, the dominant choice in spray tan equipment today. That’s a bit rushed. A quality result is more important than to apply the spray tan as quickly as possible. The actual application can be done in 5 minutes. Some technicians will do two spray passes versus one, which will take a little longer. An allowance for drying time, 5 to 10 minutes, needs to be added as well. Drying time can be shortened by using direct air from the air hose or with a hair dryer.
